Team training workshop 2

Last week was day 2 of the My Team & I team training workshop I am giving to a new group. In this session I started by asking each participant to recall the classic type of the person to their left. This gets the participants to practice remembering the main motivation and qualities of each type to which the person belongs. It is also effective in creating a positive climate amongst participants because you start by focusing on the positive traits of the persons’ type. Of course everyone possess many more skills and qualities that they have developed over time but at the core each person can identify with the qualities of their type.

I then asked for feedback about what they observed about themselves over the last week with the new knowledge about the Three Brain Synergy approach to types of people. One person shared his awareness of becoming irritable when other peoples’ ideas differed from his. His type is the mind type, the Innovator and his main motivation is ideas and the fear is lack of control. He knew he was irritable at times with others but now he knows the source and what he could start doing to control it better.

I then proceeded to coach them on setting a goal to limit the impact of the main fear of their type. This is quite a detailed process and rather than just explain, I had them actually go through each step of the goals setting process. This included defining the behavior that they wanted to change, setting the goal as S.M.A.R.T, meaning, specific, measurable, acceptable, realistic and time limit, establishing outcome measures, benefits to both themselves and the organization and how to follow-up on the goal itself.

Most people do not set tangible goals, least to say in writing. So each person would walk away with a written goal to unlock their potential to make greater use of their inherent qualities and to contribute to improved teamwork. This is huge because now everyone is committed to work on themselves from a behavioral perspective in a way that will benefit themselves and others in the organization.

As part of the goal setting process, each person wrote down an affirmation to support their goal statement. Affirmations are great ways to develop the new mindset and attitude to drive the behavioral change. I also explained in detail how to turn the affirmation into a clear vision of themselves benefiting from achieving their goal. Today, athletes use goals setting, measurement, affirmations and visualization extensively to prepare for competition and to improve their performance.

We then proceeded to work on communication skills. This is another essential element of teamwork and without it teams cannot progress beyond the second stage of team development because they cannot learn to deal independently and maturely with conflict and disagreement.

I introduced active listening and diplomatic disagreement, which begins with listening and reflecting back and then valuing the other persons’ thoughts and ideas. This is so hard for people to grasp yet it is so effective in fostering good relationships and teamwork. It is also very simple but we are so conditioned to defend our own point of view that we usually listen to be able to respond effectively in voicing our own opinion. Active listening is about listening and confirming this in words to show you understand what the other person is expressing and feeling.

The next session will continue the communications skills, which will include gentle confrontation. We will then cover the natural attitude of each type to teamwork by looking at how they tend to view change, people qualities and cooperation. This is greatly tied to whether the type is active or passive and positive or negative.
